Invitation rounds are periodically conducted throughout the program year for the following visa categories:
- Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – Family Sponsored
The number of invitations issued in each round may vary based on the volume of on-hand applications. It is important to note that state or territory government nominations for skilled visas are not impacted by these departmental invitation rounds.
Occupation Ceilings
An 'occupation ceiling' sets an upper limit on how many Expressions of Interest (EOIs) with a specific occupation can be invited from an occupation group. This measure ensures that the skilled migration program aligns with the priorities set by the Australian Government, maintains balance, and continues to invite a diverse range of skilled occupations. Notably, occupation ceilings do not apply to:
- Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) – State and Territory Nominated
Invitation Process
EOIs are ranked by points score, with the highest-ranked EOIs invited to apply for their visa first. In cases where multiple EOIs have the same points score, the 'tie break' rule is applied, prioritizing EOIs based on the date and time they achieved their score, known as the ‘date of effect’.
