Here's a brief overview of each:

Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)

The Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) is designed for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, a family member, or a state or territory government. Applicants are selected based on a points-tested system, with points awarded for factors such as age, English language proficiency, skilled work experience, and education. This visa allows individuals to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia.

Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

The Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190) requires nomination by an Australian state or territory government. It's also points-tested, aimed at skilled workers who can contribute to the nominating region's economy and fill shortages in the labor market. It offers permanent residency with the condition that visa holders live and work in the nominating state or territory for a specified period.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)

This visa is for skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government or sponsored by an eligible family member to live and work in regional Australia. It is a provisional visa for 5 years and provides a pathway to permanent residency through the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) Visa (subclass 191) after living and working in a regional area for at least three years.

Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)

The Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) allows Australian employers to nominate foreign skilled workers for permanent residency to fill positions with genuine skill shortages. Applicants can be outside Australia or temporarily residing in the country and are required to meet specific skills, age, and language requirements.

Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187)

This visa has been closed for new applications from November 2019 and replaced by the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494). It aimed at assisting employers in regional Australia to fill necessary positions through nominating skilled workers for permanent residency.

Business Innovation and Investment Visa (subclass 188 and 888)

The Business Innovation and Investment program comprises the provisional visa (subclass 188) and the permanent visa (subclass 888). It's designed for successful business owners, investors, and entrepreneurs to own and manage a business in Australia (subclass 188) or continue business and investment activity (subclass 888). Applicants must be nominated by a state or territory government or Austrade on behalf of the Australian government.

Partner Visa (subclass 820 and 801 or subclass 309 and 100)

The Partner Visa allows the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia. The subclass 820 and 801 visas are for applicants in Australia, starting with a temporary visa (820) and moving to permanent residency (801). The subclass 309 and 100 visas are for those outside Australia, similarly starting with a provisional visa (309) and progressing to permanent residency (100).

Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143 and 173)

These visas allow parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to migrate to Australia. Subclass 143 is a permanent visa, while subclass 173 is a temporary option, both requiring a significant financial contribution towards their future health and welfare costs in Australia.

Each of these visa categories is designed to meet specific needs, from filling skill shortages to promoting business investment and family reunification, providing various pathways to permanent residency in Australia.
