VETASSESS Announces Reopening of Key Trade Applications | Australia Immigration Updates

This development follows a temporary pause instituted in September 2023 to prioritize the processing of existing cases. The reopening marks a significant step forward in addressing the needs of both applicants and the workforce demand in these key sectors.

Details of Reopened Applications:

Starting June 12, applicants can submit new applications for the following occupations:

  • Chef (Commercial Cookery), ANZSCO Code 351311
  • Chef (Asian Cookery), ANZSCO Code 351311
  • Fitter (General), ANZSCO Code 323211

These applications apply to both Pathway 1 and Pathway 2 under the Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) and the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) program. The decision to reopen these categories came after discussions with Trades Recognition Australia (TRA), ensuring that the processes align with the needs of the industry and regulatory standards.

Context of the Reopening:

The pause on new applications for these occupations was initially put in place in September 2023. This allowed VETASSESS to focus on clearing the backlog and improving the efficiency of processing existing cases. The strategic pause was essential to maintain the quality and reliability of the assessment process, which is critical for maintaining industry standards and ensuring that skilled migrants meet the required competencies.

Occupations Still on Hold:

While the reopening is a positive step, new applications remain paused for the following occupations:

  • Electrician (General), ANZSCO Code 341111
  • Metal Machinist (First Class), ANZSCO Code 323214

These categories will remain closed for new applications until further notice. Ongoing discussions with Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) are expected to guide the timeline for reopening these occupations.

Implications for Applicants and the Industry:

The reopening of applications for Chefs and Fitters is a welcome move for both potential migrants and the Australian labor market. The demand for skilled professionals in these fields remains high, and this step will help fill critical gaps. For applicants, this presents an opportunity to advance their careers in Australia, benefiting from the robust support structures and pathways offered by VETASSESS and related programs.
