Australia's migration skills assessment process is undergoing significant changes with updates from Engineers Australia and VETASSESS, two key authorities responsible for evaluating qualifications. These updates focus on streamlining application pathways and reducing processing times for both professional and trade occupations.

Upcoming Changes to Engineers Australia Skills Assessments

Effective from 1st September 2024, Engineers Australia is updating the requirements for skills assessments under the Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) program for Engineering Associates, including draftspersons and technicians.

You can apply via the Australian Qualification Pathway if:

  • Your program is accredited by Engineers Australia, and
  • You commenced your program during or after the year it gained accreditation.

If your qualification is provisionally accredited, you’ll need to apply through the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) assessment pathway. This change also applies to non-accredited Australian Advanced Diplomas and Associate Degrees, which will now be assessed through the CDR pathway.

VETASSESS Skills Assessment Update:

Vetassess has announced a reduction in skills assessment times for professional and non-trade occupations. Standard assessments, which previously took 10 to 15 weeks, are now expected to be processed within 8 to 10 weeks. This change is aimed at streamlining the process for applicants.

However, the actual time taken may vary depending on the completeness of the application. If all necessary documents and information are not submitted, additional time may be required for the assessment.

For trade occupations, processing times can differ based on the specific program and whether all required documentation has been provided. Applicants are advised to visit the Trades Recognition Australia website for detailed information on expected processing times.
