New Changes to Trades Skills Assessment: What You Need to Know

Change in Application Process

When you apply for a skills assessment, VETASSESS will now review the information and documents provided to ensure they constitute enough evidence for a thorough assessment. Once your application is deemed 'assessment ready', VETASSESS will accept it and provide instructions on how to pay the assessment fee. This means that applicants will only be required to pay for an assessment once it has been confirmed as 'assessment ready'.

Changes for Pathway 1 Trade Applicants

VETASSESS is also modifying the assessment process for Pathway 1 applications across all trades, except Airconditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic, Electrician (General), Electrician (Special Class), and Plumber (General).

Stage 2 of the assessment process will now involve three steps:

  1. Video Evidence Applicants are now required to submit a selection of videos demonstrating their trade skills along with their Stage 2 application. These videos should capture specific skills outlined in the Video Guide for the nominated occupation, available on the VETASSESS website. An updated Video Guide for all trades will be accessible from April 23. Assessors will review these videos and request resubmission if they do not meet the requirements.

  2. Australian Industry Standards Online Assessment Applicants must complete a short online course on Australian industry standards relevant to their trade. Following the course, they will undergo an assessment to evaluate their understanding of these standards. Applicants have a seven-day window to complete the assessment, with the option to revisit modules if necessary. Upon acceptance of the Stage 2 application and confirmation of payment, applicants will receive an email containing login credentials for the online course.

  3. Technical Interview After successful completion of the online assessment and meeting the video evidence requirements, VETASSESS will schedule a technical interview. This interview can be conducted either online or face-to-face at one of the assessment venues and typically lasts about two hours.

These changes reflect VETASSESS's commitment to ensuring a thorough and fair assessment process for trade skills. They provide applicants with clearer guidance on the evidence required for assessment while enhancing the overall evaluation criteria. By aligning with industry standards and incorporating video evidence, VETASSESS aims to maintain the integrity and relevance of its assessments in a rapidly evolving job market.
