Australia Simplified Skilled Visa Program: New Pathways to PR
Discover Australia’s new skilled visa updates! Learn about the Skills in Demand visa, Core Skills Occupation List, and pathways to permanent residence.
Starting December 7, 2024, Australia is introducing transformative changes to its skilled visa program. These updates include the launch of the Skills in Demand (SID) visa and the introduction of the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) to better align visa processes with Australia’s workforce needs.
Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)
The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) replaces multiple previous occupation lists, streamlining skilled migration pathways. With over 450 occupations across critical sectors, the CSOL reflects workforce priorities based on comprehensive labour market analysis and stakeholder input.
Key Sectors Included:
- Construction
- Cyber Security
- Agriculture
- Health
The CSOL applies specifically to:
- Skills in Demand (SID) visa – Core Skills stream
- Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186) visa – Direct Entry stream
For full details, refer to the CSOL and identify the occupations that align with Australia’s priorities.
Skills in Demand (SID) Visa: A New Pathway
The Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, offering a simplified process for both migrants and employers. This visa allows holders to stay in Australia for up to four years and provides a clear pathway to permanent residence.
Benefits for SID Visa Holders:
- Permanent Residence Pathway: All work with an approved employer counts toward permanent residence.
- Reduced Work Experience Requirement: Applicants need just one year of experience in their nominated occupation or related field, compared to the TSS requirement.
- English Language Requirements: Similar to the TSS medium-term stream.
SID Visa Streams
The SID visa introduces three distinct streams to address diverse workforce needs:
-
Core Skills Stream
- For occupations on the CSOL identified as being in shortage.
- Requires a salary at or above the Core Skills Income Threshold of AUD73,150.
- Includes roles supported through international trade agreements.
-
Specialist Skills Stream
- Targets highly skilled individuals in high-demand roles to boost productivity.
- Open to occupations under ANZSCO 2022, except Major Group levels 3, 7, and 8 (e.g., trades workers, machinery operators, drivers, and labourers).
- Requires earnings of at least AUD135,000, ensuring parity with Australian workers in equivalent roles.
-
Labour Agreement Stream
- This stream is transitioning to the Essential Skills stream, which is under development.
Transition Arrangements for TSS Visa Holders
With the closure of TSS visa applications on December 6, 2024, all pending applications submitted before this date will be processed under the existing rules.
Pathways for Current TSS Visa Holders:
- Existing TSS visa holders retain their eligibility for permanent residence, provided they meet all criteria under the updated framework.
These changes underscore Australia’s commitment to addressing workforce shortages while offering opportunities for skilled migrants to build a future in the country. Prepare now to take advantage of these streamlined pathways.
