Unlocking Opportunities: South West's Expanded DAMA Program

Under the extended DAMA, South West businesses can now welcome up to 300 overseas workers to fill vacancies across more than 120 occupations, ranging from accountants and chefs to plumbers and nurses.

Warrnambool Mayor, Cr Ben Blain, expressed appreciation for the extension, highlighting its critical role in addressing the region's workforce needs. He emphasized how DAMA facilitates skilled workers' migration to the area, aiding local businesses to thrive and stay competitive.

The DAMA covers two temporary skill shortage visa types, namely 482 and 494, both offering pathways to permanent residency. This provision offers employers greater certainty and enhances the region's capacity to attract and retain much-needed workers.

Previously, the DAMA allowed for up to 100 endorsed workers annually, a quota that has been consistently met in recent years. Changes in eligibility criteria now enable the transition to permanent residency after two years of employment for 482 visa holders and three years for 494 visa holders.

Steve Hoy, the Council’s Manager of Economic Development, highlighted the positive impact of DAMA on the business community. He noted that feedback from local businesses informed the extension application, aiming to increase the number of endorsed workers and expand the list of approved occupations.

In recent years, workers recruited through DAMA have played a significant role in bolstering the region's economy, illustrating the program's value and importance to the South West.
