Australia continues to refine its immigration pathways to support economic growth and meet labor demands. Below are the latest updates on key visa programs, including the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES), the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement, and Partner visa processing.
The Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) provides a structured pathway for Indian graduates and early-career professionals to gain experience in Australia for up to two years. This initiative is part of the Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA) between Australia and India, fostering skills exchange in high-demand sectors.
Key Features of the MATES Program:
-
Open to professionals in renewable energy, mining, engineering, ICT, artificial intelligence, fintech, and agricultural technology.
-
Offers 3,000 temporary visa places annually through a pre-application ballot process.
-
Successful applicants can apply for a Temporary Work (International Relations) visa (subclass 403) under the MATES stream.
-
Dependents are permitted but not included in the annual quota.
The inaugural MATES ballot took place between 9 December 2024 and 7 January 2025, receiving 6,656 valid registrations. Selections were made on 8 January 2025, and successful candidates now have 30 days to lodge their visa applications.
To address labor shortages in the aged care sector, the Australian Government introduced the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement on 5 May 2023. This initiative simplifies the recruitment process for overseas workers where local talent is insufficient.
Highlights of the Agreement:
-
Designed with concessions and flexible visa requirements to facilitate smoother recruitment.
-
Increasing adoption by aged care providers and international direct care workers.
-
As of 10 January 2025, 113 agreements were in effect, covering up to 29,000 direct care positions.
This initiative continues to play a critical role in enhancing aged care services and workforce sustainability in Australia.
The Partner visa category remains a key segment of Australia’s Family Migration Program, with efforts underway to streamline processing and reduce backlogs.
Key Developments:
-
Partner visa applications increased by 16.9% in 2024–25 (as of 31 December 2024) compared to the same period in 2023–24.
-
31,351 first-stage Partner visas were granted by the end of 2024, slightly exceeding the 31,292 approvals from the previous year.
-
The processing time at the 75th percentile improved from 18 months in 2023–24 to 15 months in 2024–25.
-
Prioritization of complex cases and aged applications has led to a significant reduction in cases older than 24 months—down from 12,289 cases in June 2023 to 3,958 cases in December 2024.
The Department continues its focus on enhancing processing efficiency and reducing wait times for Partner visa applicants.
