The Victorian Government is significantly expanding opportunities for international student graduates through enhanced access to the Skilled Work Regional Visa (subclass 491). This initiative aligns with the state's goal to attract highly skilled professionals, boost regional development, and support the growth of regional communities.

Key Features of This Initiative Include:

  1. Increased Nomination Places for Graduates: In the 2024-25 program year, the Victorian Government will reserve at least 500 nomination places for the Skilled Work Regional Visa (subclass 491). This represents a minimum of 25% of Victoria’s total allocation of subclass 491 visa places, specifically dedicated to international student graduates from Victorian educational institutions. This ensures that a substantial number of skilled graduates can secure a pathway to permanent residency through regional migration.

  2. Expanded Eligibility for Melbourne-based Graduates: Graduates who are currently living and working in metropolitan Melbourne are now eligible to submit a Registration of Interest (ROI) for the subclass 491 visa nomination. This opens up new opportunities for them to relocate to regional Victoria, contributing to the local economy while pursuing career growth in industries that are in demand across regional areas.

  3. Strengthening Regional Communities: These new pathways are designed to encourage skilled graduates to settle in regional Victoria, where they can help address skill shortages in key industries such as healthcare, engineering, IT, and education. By offering more accessible migration opportunities, the Victorian Government aims to foster sustainable growth, diversify the regional workforce, and enhance local economies.

  4. Career Growth and Regional Integration: International graduates who choose to relocate to regional Victoria will not only benefit from improved visa opportunities but will also have the chance to integrate into supportive, growing communities. Many regional areas offer lower living costs, career development incentives, and strong networks to help graduates thrive both professionally and personally.

  5. Commitment to Long-Term Regional Development: The Victorian Government’s commitment to regional development is further strengthened through this initiative, which aligns with broader strategies to decentralize population growth, create jobs, and ensure the prosperity of regional towns and cities. International graduates bring valuable skills and cultural diversity, which are crucial to the ongoing development and resilience of regional communities.

With these new pathways, Victoria is positioning itself as a leading destination for international students and skilled migrants. Graduates have more opportunities than ever to build meaningful careers, contribute to the development of regional areas, and ultimately secure permanent residency in Australia.
