Skills Assessments for Marketing Specialists Through VETASSESS

General professional occupations like marketing specialists, can be assessed by VETASSESS. If you are applying for a permanent residency visa nominating marketing specialist as your occupation, you may need a suitable skills assessment to make your visa application. VETASSESS is the assessing body that oversees skills assessments for advertising and marketing professions. Your profession falls under the ‘general occupations’ category.

 

Requirements

Marketing Specialist (ANZSCO Code 225113)

This occupation requires a qualification which is assessed as comparable to the educational level of an AQF* Bachelor degree or higher degree, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

In addition to this, applicants must have at least one year of post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years which is highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

If employment is not post-qualification, then five additional years of highly relevant employment are required.If the degree is not in a highly relevant field, three years of employment at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years in a field which is highly relevant to the nominated occupation is required. This is reduced to two years if there is an additional qualification at least at AQF Diploma level in a highly relevant field.

A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a positive Skills Assessment Outcome.

*AFQ level qualification: Your qualifications will be assessed against the Australian Qualifications Framework for comparability to the Australian standard. Employment must be paid, skilled and relevant. This means that your role must match to a great degree with the skills a marketing specialist is expected to possess in Australia. According to ANZSCO, a marketing specialist must be able to perform these roles:

  • planning, developing and organising advertising policies and campaigns to support sales objectives
  • advising executives and clients on advertising strategies and campaigns to reach target markets, creating consumer awareness and effectively promoting the attributes of goods and services
  • coordinating production of advertising campaigns involving specialised activities, such as artwork, copywriting, media scripting, television and film production and media placement, within time and budget constraints
  • analysing data regarding consumer patterns and preferences
  • interpreting and predicting current and future consumer trends
  • researching potential demand and market characteristics for new goods and services and collecting and analysing data and other statistical information
  • supporting business growth and development through the preparation and execution of marketing objectives, policies and programs
  • commissioning and undertaking market research to identify market opportunities for new and existing goods and services
  • advising on all elements of marketing such as product mix, pricing, advertising and sales promotion, selling, and distribution channels

If your role did not cover a majority of the above tasks, then your employment cannot be considered as highly relevant or at an appropriate skill level, and the time you have spent in that role cannot be counted.Your pay must also have been at market rate or above for a marketing specialist, as remuneration reflects the skill level of the job. Work is not required to be full-time, but must meet a minimum of 20 hours a week regularly. Irregular work that averages 20 hours a week over a year will not be considered.

 

What you will need

Assuming you satisfy all the above criterion, you’re ready to make an application:

  • Passport photo
  • Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport)
  • Proof of change of name (if applicable)
  • Qualification certificate(s)
  • Academic transcript(s)
  • Employment evidence
  • Resume

All documents have to be scanned in high resolution and in colour. Where translations are required, you will need to submit both originals alongside translations.Let’s talk about employment evidence. Documents that are relevant will include anything that details your period of employment, payslips, tax summaries and so forth. More critically, you need to be able to clearly show the relevance between your experience and what is laid out as a marketing specialist’s role in ANZSCO. Here is where your employer’s reference makes a huge impact. If you could request that your employer provides a little more insight into your role as opposed to a generic recommendation, it would be greatly in your favor. Likewise, pay attention to how your resume is phrased in reference to the ANZSCO defined skills, but do not lie of course.

 

Application

Your application is can be made online or by post and will have an application charge. VETASSESS recommends that you submit your applications online as these are generally finalised sooner. If you apply online, VETASSESS will communicate with you both through email and through the VETASSESS portal.Typically VETASSESS 12 to 14 working weeks on receipt of a decision ready application. Further to this, if your qualifications are in Chinese, your processing time will be extended for another 8 to 10 weeks. Yikes! If you need your results in a hurry, fret not. You will be able to request for your application to be made urgent provided you have good reason. You will need to fill out a request form and submit it, along with evidence as to why it is important for your application to be finalised quickly, along with your application. If you have an employment offer, for example, and you need to make your visa application but your current visa is set to expire soon, you may be considered for an urgent request. In such a case documents that could help you include evidence from your employer or and evidence of your visa expiry.


Theoretically…
Imaginary Jesse studied a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing at the National University of Singapore. Jesse worked for five years after he attained his degree as a marketing executive. Jesse then decided he wanted more exposure, and wanted to apply for a state sponsorship 190 visa with Northern Territory, nominating marketing specialist as his occupation. To apply for state sponsorship, Jesse required a suitable skills assessment as a marketing specialist. As Jessie has a Bachelor’s degree that is highly relevant as well as more than the minimum one year work experience in a role at an appropriate skill level, Jesse’s VETASSESS application was successful. Jesse went on to apply for his 190 visa and now lives happily ever after in Northern Territory.
